‘I am absolutely delighted that our company has received this recognition. The team at Chatteris work incredibly hard to develop our apprentices, which is born out by the fact that almost 50% of current employees have been trained at Metalcraft. The training facility that we have on our site has been developed over a number of years such that we’re now able to recruit up to 10 apprentices a year and we’ve made a commitment to recruit that number every year until 2020. Moreover, we’re looking to encourage more women into engineering and are hoping to attract more female apprentice recruits this year.’
Metalcraft was awarded the National Apprenticeship Service Medium Employer of the Year award at the East of England regional awards and is a finalist at the national awards.
Martin Lawrence, Commercial Director of the business, explains that apprentices can pursue a variety of career pathways once they complete their qualifications with the organisation: ‘They could be a welder, fabricator, machinist, or they could go into production, sales or design engineering – dependent on business needs and the needs of the individual. Myself, our Managing Director, our Business Conformance Director, Sales Manager & our Projects Production Manager are all former apprentices, so no role is off limits!’. Martin admits that apprenticeships are in the organisations DNA, he concludes: ‘With more than 90% of our apprentices staying on with us after completing their apprenticeship – they are an essential driver of the business, ensuring we continue to thrive and grow.’
