Cockermouth Community Fund

The original Metalcraft Community Fund was established in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire in 2017 and has supported over 30 local organisations, either financially or through practical support, since that time.

The new fund, which was launched at Cockermouth Town Hall on Tuesday 4th February, will build on the success of this fund, offering an additional £2,000 per year of support for organisations based in Cockermouth.

Stephen Buttriss, sales manager at Metalcraft, said: “As a supplier to the nuclear industry, we’ve had a long relationship with the county of Cumbria and wanted to give something back to this key community, which has supported our business for over 40 years.

“To date, the Metalcraft Community Fund has given nearly £8,000 to organisations in Cambridgeshire and, following discussions with the local town council, we agreed that a similar scheme could work well for Cockermouth.”

£500 per quarter will be made available to community groups and not-for-profit organisations based in Cockermouth to support specific projects, as opposed to day-to-day running costs. Organisations will also be able to apply for practical support from the company, delivered by apprentices on its award-winning scheme.

Stephen continued: “As a Top 100 Apprentice Employer, we’re proud of the impact our apprentices have in their local communities. As well as developing essential engineering skills, it’s important to us that our apprentices understand the impact of their work in the wider community and they frequently tell us how much they enjoy getting involved in community projects.

“We’re looking forward to finding out more about the work of local community groups and not-for-profit organisations in Cockermouth and playing a stronger part in that community.”

Councillor Julie Laidlow, Mayor of Cockermouth, said: “The Town Council is very excited about the launch of the Metalcraft Cockermouth Community Fund.  The application process is easy and we would encourage as many local organisations as possible to apply for funding. I would like to thank Metalcraft for this wonderful opportunity.”

Applications will be reviewed by a panel including representatives from Metalcraft, the local council and Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership. The deadline for the first round of applications is 31 March 2020 and successful organisations will be informed by the end of April.
